Her Story

This week's challenge was called Hands.

Through the simple placement of hands, this photo tells a powerful story of love, compassion, mercy, and hope. The two hands on the left belong to a woman who's life has been ravaged by leprosy. The hand on the right belongs to a woman who once lived in that leprosy colony as a child, and now spends her life serving and loving those inflicted.

I took this photograph in a leprosy village in Thailand while the woman on the left was telling her story- how she found leprosy on her body when she was very young. How she was quarantined and then sent away from her family- never again to see her loved ones. How she was never touched once after they found the disease. Not once.

When she moved into the leprosy colony, she was finally able to marry and have children. But her children wanted nothing to do with their deformed mother and their crippled father. They disowned her as soon as they could get away. Her husband died. Her friends died. The disease devastated every corner of her life. She was hopeless and crushed under the weight of imperfection and pain.

Until the missionaries came.

"I told them, 'I am unclean! Don't come near! I have leprosy' The missionaries didn't listen to me. They came up and hugged me. They touched me! That is the first time I felt real love."

They showed her love. They put a hand on her shoulder; they hugged her neck.They touched her ugly skin. They helped her broken heart heal. They brought an antidote for the disease- one that stopped it in it's destructive path. This miracle medicine couldn't reverse the effects, but it gave her the never-before attainable hope of a long life. It gave her hope that the deformation could be stopped.

Since that time she's married again. Jesus has adopted her into his family. She has a fruit tree in her front yard that she can harvest and sell the fruit in the market. She can help her neighbors who are more afflicted than she. She feels loved and appreciated. Through the simple act of touch

This picture reminds me the simple act of touch can be heart-healing. It can offer hope and a renewed sense of worth. It can give life.

One of my favorite things to do is hang out with my four sisters.

Sisters are such a gift.

They are friends that God gives from the very beginning. Friends who, even when times are difficult and dark and there doesn't seem to be a light at the end, will pull through and come out stronger than before. I am so blessed as to have such a relationship with my own sisters.

It's so fun to see others who have experienced this same joy and friendship in their own lives. Rachel and Becca are two sisters who, in their own words, would rather spend time with each other than with anyone else. They have a bond that no other friends could sever. I had the privilege of doing a session with these girls in celebration of Becca's birthday, and it was such a pleasure to be able to capture the friendship and laughter that these girls share.

Rainy Day Projects

The past few days have been dark. Dark days urge me to partake in hot tea, comforting music, and creating. For my personality, being inspired is key to creating. Dark days such as these serve as my inspiration of sorts. They push me to look at my immediate surroundings and think through my past. They force me to be inspired on my own and without the aid of beautiful blue and vibrant green. These past few days, though outwardly dark, have been full of inspiration and music and laughter and creativity and light. Beautiful light.

Project 1: Make a Journal using an Old Book Cover

Although this project took a little more thought and preparation, and although there were a few mishaps along the way, I feel very adequately prepaired for my next Old-Book New-Book venture.

Project 2: Make a Tie-Die Birthday Cake in a Mason Jar

This project started off great, became extremely messy, almost burned the house down, began to get better, didn't burn the house down, and finally was a huge success. It was a wonderful experiment, and I am happy to say that the next time I attempt this feat, I will know exactly how it should be done.

It's been a while, but i'm back in business! I'm hoping to have a lot of new material being posted in the very near future! I'll be posting from Twitter soon as well, so everyone can stay up to date. I returned last Sunday from my latest photography gig in Thailand. Thailand is a beautiful country. The people were amazing. So full of life. Years of hard work, joy, pain, laughter, and loneliness were piled around the old men and womens' eyes. You could see it in their brief glances. You could hear it in their voices. These were people who knew what it meant to live and live well. I learned so much from them. I hope that what I saw in them will be revealed to you through the photographs i was able to capture, and that you will be inspired by their beauty and joy.

Back to school shopping, last minute vacations, and 'just one more pool party!'- summer is coming to a close. It's been a very different summer for me- on May 15th i packed up and headed down to Georgia to work as a cook at a camp called Woodlands. My time there was unlike anything i have ever experienced. Coming back to Greenville was hard, but I was ready to get back into normal life...and everyone knows what normal life means...Photographer is back in business!

Devon's senior shoot was SO much fun to do! Devon is such an great guy. He has played soccer since he was 4, and is accepting a soccer scholarship for college. Since he's such an athlete, the challenge to bring this out in a photo was immense...but at the same time, i also wanted to make sure to capture his fun-loving, carefree side. We decided that the West End offered a lot of potential to bring out both sides of his personality.

Sunny Days!!

The south is notorious for the drastic changes in weather. Usually, the weeks surrounding Valentines are warm, sunny, and perfect picnic days. This year I decided to take advantage of these warm days and shoot photos for a couple different groups. The first series consists of a family and their thirteen dogs. Yes, you read that correctly. Thirteen!!! One white lab and her twelve puppies. This was a very fun and energetic shoot. Enjoy looking through our day!

Autumn is my absolute favorite time of year. Crisp, cool weather, the leaves changing from green into brilliant and exotic colors, apple pies, hoodies, hats, playing street-football until your nose and ears are numb then going inside and warming up by a crackling fire, the smell of freshly baked pumpkin bread; yes, fall is by far my favorite season.
The aim of this shoot was to capture the feeling of fall, mostly focusing on the outdoor aspects. The shoot was on the more spontanious side. I had the perfect setting, the perfect lighting, and the perfect subjects. Photoshoot? i think yes =)
